Live estimate

Illustrative. Copy the area per carton from your product label.
Straight lay often needs less than diagonal or herringbone.
How this estimate works

The allowance is explicit and editable. Purchase quantities round up to whole units so you do not plan below the calculated need. Values marked as examples are planning inputs, not product data.

How the flooring calculator works

Flooring is sold by the carton, and each carton covers a stated area. The calculator finds the floor area, adds your waste allowance for cuts and offcuts, divides by the carton coverage, and rounds up so you are never a box short.

The chart shows the three layers of what you buy: the floor itself, the allowance, and the extra area that comes from rounding up to whole boxes.

Formula and assumptions

Area = L × W
Need = Area × (1 + waste)
Boxes = round up(Need ÷ coverage per box)
coverage per box
square feet per carton, printed on the label
waste
allowance for cuts, layout, and defects

Assumptions and limits

  • Box coverage is your input; the default 20 sq ft is illustrative.
  • Waste is a planning control, not a guarantee for every layout.
  • Does not include underlayment, transitions, or trim.

Worked example

A 12 × 10 ft room, cartons that cover 20 sq ft (example), and a 10% allowance.

  1. Floor = 120 sq ft; with 10% = 132 sq ft.
  2. 132 ÷ 20 = 6.6 boxes.
  3. Round up: buy 7 boxes (140 sq ft).

These are the calculator’s default values, so the live result above matches this example until you change an input.

How to measure correctly

  • Measure wall to wall, including closets and under appliances you will floor under.
  • Add rooms separately when the flooring runs through doorways, then add the boxes.
  • Note the plank direction: long, narrow rooms and diagonal layouts change the waste.
  • Check whether the carton coverage already includes any manufacturer allowance.

Flooring Calculator FAQ

How many boxes of flooring do I need?

Divide your floor area plus waste by the square feet per box and round up. A 120 sq ft room with 10% waste and 20 sq ft boxes needs 7 boxes.

How much extra flooring should I buy?

Installers and manufacturers commonly plan more for diagonal and herringbone layouts and irregular rooms than for a straight lay in a rectangle. Check your product’s installation guide and keep the percentage editable.

Can I use this for laminate, vinyl plank, and hardwood?

Yes. Any product sold by the carton works the same way. Enter the coverage per carton from the label.

Should I keep leftover boxes?

Keeping a box or a few planks from the same lot makes future repairs easier, because later production runs can differ slightly in color.

Do I subtract kitchen islands or cabinets?

Floating floors often stop at cabinets, so you can subtract fixed islands. If the floor goes under, include the area.

Does the estimate include underlayment?

No. Underlayment is usually sold by roll coverage; the flooring cost calculator has a line for it.
