How the flooring cost calculator works
The calculator counts boxes as the flooring calculator does, multiplies by your price per box, then adds installation at your quoted rate per square foot of floor and any lump sum for underlayment, transitions, and trim.
The chart splits the total into flooring for the room, the allowance and whole-box rounding you pay for, installation, and extras. The all-in cost per square foot is the number to compare quotes with.
Formula and assumptions
- price per box
- your carton price
- install rate
- optional labor quote per square foot of floor
Assumptions and limits
- All prices are your inputs; defaults are examples, not market prices.
- Before tax and delivery.
Worked example
A 12 × 10 ft room, 20 sq ft boxes, 10% allowance, and an example $45 per box.
- Boxes = 7 (see the flooring calculator).
- 7 × $45 = $315.00.
- No installation or extras entered: total $315.00.
These are the calculator’s default values, so the live result above matches this example until you change an input.
How to measure correctly
- Ask whether installation quotes are per square foot of floor or of material.
- Include removal of the old floor, subfloor repairs, and transitions as extras if they apply.
- Compare all-in cost per square foot between products.
Flooring Cost Calculator FAQ
How do I calculate flooring cost per square foot?
Divide the box price by the square feet per box. A $45 box covering 20 sq ft is $2.25 per sq ft. The all-in figure adds waste, installation, and extras across the floor area.
Why is my cost higher than price per sq ft × room area?
Because you pay for waste and for whole boxes. The chart shows that difference as “allowance & whole boxes.”
Does the estimate include installation?
Only if you enter a rate. Leave it at 0 for DIY.
What extras should I budget?
Underlayment, transitions and thresholds, quarter round or baseboard, adhesives, and removal of the old floor are common. Enter them as one lump sum.
Is tax included?
No. Add sales tax and delivery after the estimate.
