Tile Cost Calculator

Estimate a tile budget from the area, carton coverage, and your price per square foot. Tile is bought in whole boxes, so the cost covers what you buy, not just what you lay.

How this estimate works

The allowance is explicit and editable. Purchase quantities round up to whole units so you do not plan below the calculated need. Values marked as examples are planning inputs, not product data.

How the tile cost calculator works

Tile is usually priced per square foot but sold by the box. The calculator finds the area with allowance, rounds up to whole boxes, multiplies the purchased area by your price, and adds setting materials such as thinset, grout, and edge trim.

The chart shows tile for the floor, the cost of allowance and whole boxes, and setting materials.

Formula and assumptions

Boxes = round up(L × W × (1 + waste) ÷ box coverage)
Tile cost = Boxes × box coverage × price per sq ft
Total = Tile cost + setting materials

Assumptions and limits

  • Prices are your inputs.
  • Materials only, before tax and labor.

Worked example

An 8 × 6 ft floor, 10% allowance, 10 sq ft boxes, and an example $4 per sq ft.

  1. 48 sq ft × 1.10 = 52.8 sq ft.
  2. 52.8 ÷ 10 = 5.28; round up to 6 boxes (60 sq ft).
  3. 60 × $4 = $240.00.

These are the calculator’s default values, so the live result above matches this example until you change an input.

How to measure correctly

  • Use the coverage per box printed on the carton.
  • Ask whether the price is per square foot or per piece.
  • List thinset, grout, backer board, and trim as setting materials.

Tile Cost Calculator FAQ

How do I calculate tile cost?

Work out boxes from area plus waste, multiply the purchased square feet by the price per square foot, then add setting materials.

Why price whole boxes?

Stores sell tile by the box, so you pay for any partial box you need. That is often a noticeable share of small projects.

What setting materials do I need?

Commonly thinset or mortar, grout, spacers, and any edge or transition trim, plus backer board or membrane for wet areas. Your product instructions list them.

Does this include labor?

No. Tile installation quotes vary with tile size, pattern, and prep. Add a quote separately.

Is large-format tile more expensive to install?

It can require flatter substrate and more careful handling. Ask your installer; this tool estimates material only.
