Walls & Trim guides
Short, practical answers to go with the calculators.
4x8 vs 4x12 drywall sheets
Compare sheet counts, seams, and handling for the two most common drywall sizes.
How to estimate wallpaper rolls
Count full-height drops, add trim and pattern repeat, and see why roll area alone misleads.
How to measure for baseboard and crown molding
Convert net perimeter into piece counts while keeping corners and openings visible.
How high should wainscoting be?
The one-third rule, when to go taller, and how to plan panels and cap rail around doors and windows.
Common questions
Why count wallpaper by drops instead of area?
Each strip must run the full wall height, and the leftover at the end of a roll is often too short for another strip. Counting drops avoids a short order.
What is the difference between baseboard and crown molding math?
Baseboard stops at doorways, so you subtract them. Crown runs the full ceiling line and has more corner waste.
Do these include the ceiling?
Drywall and wallpaper are wall-only. Calculate a ceiling as its own area.
